Temporary email
Low-risk trial signup
Use a temporary address to try a feature or get a one-time download, as long as it doesn’t involve payments, sensitive information, or anything important you need to keep.
If you decide to keep the account, switch it to a long-term address before the temporary inbox expires and verify that the change worked.
Temporary email / dedicated test alias
Development and email testing
Use temporary email to check a signup message and its verification code. For tests spanning multiple days or ongoing test notifications, use a dedicated alias instead.
Only test systems you’re authorized to access, and don’t use production keys or real user data. Successful receipt alone doesn’t verify the entire delivery chain.
Email alias
Ongoing subscriptions and order updates
Create an alias for each merchant or subscription. Messages still arrive in your real inbox, and it’s easier to identify the source if spam starts.
Cancel the subscription or change the merchant’s email address before disabling an alias. Disabling an alias won’t cancel a service for you.
Use an email you control long term
Account recovery and security alerts
Don’t link important accounts to temporary email. For financial, work, or core identity accounts, use an email address you control long term.
If you use an alias to hide your address, keep a separate recovery code, authenticator, or other supported recovery option. Don’t rely on forwarding as your only safeguard.
